Kenmare is a haven of tranquillity, gourmet food and breathtaking scenery in one of the most natural, unspoilt environments. The town, founded in 1670 by Sir William Petty, has preserved many original features. Development has been sympathetic to the tradition of an Irish town. It now bustles with over 30 restaurants, bars, craft shops, hotels, guest houses, and a host of activities for your enjoyment. Kenmare's hotels and restaurants are among some of the world's finest establishments. Kenmare is a paradise for sporting enthusiasts with two 18 hole Golf Courses, a newly built Sailing Centre with a range of boating activities. It boasts some of the best rivers for Salmon fishing in Europe and is linked to both the Kerry way and Beara way walking trails. Páirc An Callan or Callan Field is named after the Battle of Callan which took place in August 1261 a few miles from Kenmare. The Battle site location is where the Roughty and Slaheny Rivers converge. Finghin MacCarthaigh was careful to select a battleground suited to his own lightly armed and nimble figthers. John Fitzthomas GitzGerald and his son Maurice were killed together with fifteen knights and more than 300 men. The out come of the Battle ensured MacCarthaigh (McCarthy) Clans dominance in the South West for the following 300 years. | ||
